“A new, more current system would cost between $1.5 and 2 million”\ \ Really?  You got a high schooler in the 80’s to build C/Assembly system on  a Commodore, but to replace it now costs 2 million? \ \ Why not hold two contests in the school district…\ \ 1) Build prototype replacement HVAC control system contest.  ..bet some kids could take a few raspberry pi’s / arduino devices and wifi enable a system for the distict.\ \ 2) Hold a follow on contest to see who can hack and take over the prototyped systems the quickest (I assume they can all be broken).   Take system that was the hardest to hack, and strengthen / patch it.  Put out a bug bounty for any future security holes found (keeps the kids from pranking the system to much)\ \ #programming{.ot-hashtag .bidi_isolate}\ #makerspace{.ot-hashtag .bidi_isolate}
