With warfare/conflicts shifting to guerrilla tactics between countries, I believe the security pendulum will have to find a new equilibrium. \ \ I would be happy if the masses put more thought in their online sharing habits as a start.  Maybe ask themselves before they post if they would want their family, friends and boss to know this information.

I don’t think that will happen until after a significant event. Warfare in the 1st world doesn’t usually affect the average citizen, be it large military or guerilla conflicts. Small unit actions have little chance to effect large swaths of the population, which is why they go for the public spaces (buildings, malls, etc.). That sort of attack doesn’t need the personalization of stalking someone’s twitter feed.

A significant event like another 9/11 could cause the security pendulum to sharply skew in one direction, but what type of event would help it swing the other way? When conflicts are increasing becoming  battles with small mobile groups versus nation states,  what would restore a sense of peace?

It would take a tragedy of misunderstanding. A 7 year-old shot in a TSA security line at an airport. Something of that nature.
