When 30%~ of the downstream traffic in North America is video streaming (e.g. Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu) I can appreciate the pressure Mozilla is under. \ \ But if you turn away from your founding principles and implement DRM like your main competitors, what differentiates you in the market? \ \ Now many users will flock to the best performing DRM browser versus sticking to a slower previously open source browser based on past philosophical appreciation?\ \ \ \ #drm{.ot-hashtag .bidi_isolate}\ #firefox{.ot-hashtag .bidi_isolate}\ #w3ceme{.ot-hashtag .bidi_isolate}

Originally shared by Will Hill{.reshare-attribution}Mozilla has done a very stupid thing  There is no balance in digital restrictions, just ownership of your machine by a remote and often malicious party.  I have little faith that a “sandbox” will preserve people from malice or bugs.  Even if these “modules” work perfectly, their purpose is to do things you don’t want while preventing you from doing what you do want.  All of the old problems of plugins will persist in this new form.  Hollywood movie makers are no more likely to use this platform than prior versions, so they are laughing all the way to the bank at the damage they just did to PCs as media players.  Look at all the stale stuff on Netflix and you get an idea of how Hollywood really treats people who cooperate.  This won’d end well for Mozilla or users.\ \ Mozilla is also dead wrong about a browser that lacks malice being challenged in some fundamental way.  Even on a broken platform like Windows, people might want Mozilla to be their main browser and then right click open some sites in a less user friendly browser.  Mozilla’s whole reputation is built on being less malicious than other browsers, and not working with this disaster would have strengthened that reputation.  \ \ See also,   {.link-embed}

Firefox’s adoption of closed-source DRM breaks my heart
